WILLIAM ALLEN MARTIN

 

 

    The above Confederate Veteran is the most honored ancestor of Ralph Franklin Treadaway, a member of Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp # 469 in Rome, GA. William Allen Martin, the great-great-grandfather of compatriot Treadaway,  was an Ensign and 1st Lt in Co G, 65th Regiment of Gist's Brigade in Georgia. 1st Lt Martin was killed on November 30, 1864 and is buried in Franklin, TN in the McGavock Confederate Cemetery.

    William Allen Martin was born on March 15, 1828 in Henry County, Virginia to Constantine and Judith (Turner) Martin. He had 1 brother - Thomas Benton - and 7 sisters - Nancy J., Sarah P., Harriet T., Lucinda, Louisa, Alzira and Flora.

    William married Clarissa Hicks on October 6, 1853 in Henry County, Virginia and moved to Rome, Georgia in November, 1853. They had a son - Edwin Constantine - and 4 daughters - Ara Minta, Eliza, Helen and Judith.

    William joined the Confederate Army on May 6, 1862 in Rome, Georgia and became a member of Co F, Smith's Legion of the 1st Georgia, Partisan Rangers. In 1863, after the campaign through Kentucky, there was a reorganization and Smith's Legion became part of the 65th Regiment of Georgia. William then became a member of Co D, 65th Regiment, Georgia Infantry. He then transferred to Co G, 65th Georgia Regiment in March 1864. William was elected Ensign and 1st Lt on April 28, 1864. He appeared on a Report of Staff Officers and Acting Staff Officers serving in Cheatham's Corps, Army of Tennessee, in Gist's Brigade, Report dated Tuscumbia, Alabama, November 7, 1864.

    Carrying the Battle Flag of the 65th Regiment of Georgia, William was shot and killed on November 30, 1864 during the Battle at Franklin, TN. He is buried at the Confederate Cemetery in Franklin, TN.
