The SCV needs you!
The memory and reputation of the Confederate soldier, as well as the motives for his suffering and sacrifice, are being consciously distorted by some in an attempt to rewrite history. Unless the descendants of Southern soldiers resist those efforts, a unique part of our nation's cultural heritage will cease to exist.
Membership in the Sons of Confederate Veterans is open to all male descendants of any veteran who served honorably in the Confederate armed forces.
Membership can be obtained through either lineal or collateral family lines. A lineal descendant means you are a direct blood descendant of the veteran - a grandson, great-grandson, great-great grandson, etc. A collateral descendant means you are not a direct descendant of the veteran but you share a common ancestor, so the veteran is your great uncle, great-great-uncle, 3rd cousin, etc.
Kinship to a veteran must be documented genealogically.
The minimum age for membership is 12 years old.
How to Join
- Find an ancestor who served the Confederacy and obtain proof of his service.
All Southern states’ archives have microfilm records of the soldiers who fought from that state, and a copy of the information can be obtained for a nominal fee. You can access the Georgia State Archives online at http://cdm.sos.state.ga.us.
Many service and pension records can be found online at such sites as www.footnote.com and www.ancestry.com.
In addition, many public libraries have information on the service records of local veterans as well.
The SCV has a network of genealogists to assist you in tracing you ancestor's Confederate service if needed. Contact your local camp for more information.
