With Colonel Yeiser as its first Commander, the Sons of Confederate Veterans in Rome was born. That was in 1904. That was also when the Sons of Confederate Veterans was then known as the United Confederate Veterans. The Rome Camp, along with other Camps throughout Georgia, was started in response to a growing wave of adoration toward the dwindling ranks of true Confederate veterans of the War of Northern Aggression. With Sons of Confederate Veterans Adjutant General Nathan Bedford Forrest vowing to return to Georgia after 1911 to "organize Camps in every city in Georgia that does not have one", the Rome Camp grew.

However, as increasing numbers of Veterans passed away, by the mid-40's the Camp seemed to pass into eternity. That is until 1989 when it was revived by a small band of Roman sons and grandsons of the revered Confederate Veteran. After a visit to the Dallas, Georgia Camp, Ed Byars, John Carruth and Bill Edwards chartered a new Camp. After electing Mark Harrison as the new Commander, the Camp slowly got involved in Confederate Memorial Services. Then came cemetery clean-ups and the setting of historical monuments.

With 2004 now here, the Camp, now led by Commander Don Adams, conducts regular Living Histories at all surrounding county elementary schools, has founded its own Color Guard unit, performs Confederate Memorial Services for our Camp as well as others, participates in numerous parades, and holds Black Powder Shoots and Motorcycle Poker Runs.

As the Camp grows, so grows its responsibility to the community as well as the perpetuation of our Southern Heritage. With that in mind, the future is bright for the Rome Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Pictured above are the current Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 469 officers. They are, from left to right, Hugh Durden - 2nd Lt Commander, Don Adams - Commander, Denson Hamby - 1st Lt Commander, Stephen Carnes - Adjutant.

The gentlemen above represent all but one of the Commanders for Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 469 since 1989. They are, from left to right, Ed Byars - 1991 thru 1992, Alan (Bo) Youngblood - 1993 thru 1994, Don Adams - current Commander, Larry Barwick - 1997 thru 1998, Buddy Autry - 2001 thru 2002, Mark Harrison - 1989 thru 1990, Mike Ragland - 1999 thru 2000.

Among the 63 members of Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 469 present for the Camp centennial photograph was Toni Turk, second from the end on the right. Compatriot Turk holds the distinction of being the Camp member hailing from the furthest point from Rome - Blanding, Utah. Interestingly, Toni chose the Rome Camp with much forethought, having had Confederate ancestors who served in both the Cherokee Artillery as well as in Forrest's Escort.
