NEXT MEETING
The next meeting of the General N.B. Forrest SCV Camp 469 will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2008 beginning at 7:00 pm at the Sara Hightower Regional Library in Rome.
Camp member Wayne Shelly will be our guest speaker for the evening. Wayne will give a program on the odd and eerie things that have been heard about at or close to Confederate graves. Audience participation is encouraged. ANNUAL DUES
It’s time to pay your annual camp dues of $48.00. This covers National, State and the local camp. Payment insures that you are kept abreast of the goings on in the SCV on all levels via the Confederate Veteran Magazine, the Georgia Confederate Newspaper and the camp newsletter. Please bring your payment to the September meeting or mail it to SCV Camp 469, 76 Plantation Drive, Rome, GA 30165.
SCV SHIRTS
The camp has ordered a limited number of SCV polo shirts that will be for sale to camp members on a first come basis. The price will be:
$25 for large and $ 27 for XL and XXL. These shirts cost $35 (plus shipping) through the SCV. We hope to have the shirts available at the September meeting.
ADOPT A ROAD
Camp 469 held our quarterly clean up along Hwy 20 on August 16 and collected 33 bags of trash as well as several interesting photographs. Thanks to 2nd Lt. Commander John Harrison for coordinating this on-going project. Thanks also to the following for assisting with clean up: Merroll Smith, Mike Morton, Brian Byrd, Stephen Carnes, Daniel Fisher, Jim Dugger and John Harrison.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
In an effort to make our camp more visible to the Rome / Floyd County Community and to recruit new members, the camp has placed an advertisement in the Model High Football Program for the 2008 season. Also, the camp is considering participating in the Trout Unlimited Chili Cook Off on October 11th at Ridge Ferry Park. Mike Morton will be the contact person for this event if approved by the camp.
REDNECK RUMMAGE SALE
Camp 469 will participate in the “Redneck Rummage Sale” held annually at the State Mutual Stadium in Rome. This years date is Saturday, September 20th, beginning at 7 am. Set-up will begin prior to the crack of dawn and Merroll Smith will have all of the details so check with him at the September camp meeting or call him at (706) 234-0093. Merroll will need assistance setting up, selling and tearing down our booth. Please make plans to assist with this event.
BATTLE OF CHICKAMAUGA RE-ENACTMENT
The Battle of Chickamauga reenactment will be held September 19 – 21st near Davis Crossroads located west of Lafayette, GA. This will be the 145th Anniversary of the Battle of Chickamauga and organizers are planning on this being a very large and exciting event. Battles will be held all three days beginning Friday afternoon with the Battle of Davis Crossroads in McLemore’s Cove and ending Sunday afternoon with the Battle of Snodgrass Hill. Tickets range from $20 for a one day pass to $50 for all three days. For additional event information check out their website at: www.battleofchickamauga.net.
