NEXT MEETING

The next Camp meeting will be held Thursday, August 3rd at the Senior Center beginning at 7 p.m. The Senior Center is located on Riverside Parkway and is only accessible from the bypass at the State Mutual Stadium intersection.

Our guest speaker will be member John Carruth. John’s topic will be uniforms of the Civil War.

John will also give an update on the plans for Heritage Holidays during the month of October.

CULPEPPER TO LEAD CIVIL WAR COMMISSION

Former Bridge Commander, John Culpepper, was recently selected to serve as chairman of the Georgia Civil War Commission.

The commission, formerly overseen by the Georgia Dept of Natural Resources, was moved under the Department of Economic Development on July 1st.

“That change puts us in a better position to preserve historic battlefield sites and other places by promoting heritage tourism,” Culpepper said.

COOSA VALLEY FAIR

Camp 469 will once again be participating in the Coosa Valley Fair. The dates for the fair will be October 3rd thru October 7th.

The fair annually attracts thousands of visitors to Rome and is an excellent opportunity for the Camp to recruit new members and to perform a little fund raising.

Volunteers will be needed to staff the booth each evening and all day Saturday so mark your calendar and reserve these dates.

CONFEDERATE ART AUCTION

Gallery 63, in Atlanta, will be selling the Confederate art and memorabilia amassed by industrialist Frank Ryder. The date of the auction is August 13th at Gallery 63 located at 6363 Roswell Rd, Atlanta.

This is an excellent opportunity to purchase pieces of history at no minimum and no reserve. In addition to art, there is antebellum furniture and collectibles.

Contact Elmer Matthews (store mgr), at 404-252-2555 for additional info.

HERITAGE HOLIDAYS PLANNER

The month of October is always filled with activities for the Camp surrounding Heritage Holidays. October of 2006 will be extra special because of its emphasis on the Civil War. As a matter of fact this year the organizers of the month long celebration are hosting an event that has been titled, “A Festival of Mid 19th Century Fine Art and Civil War History.” This festival will feature concerts, plays and musicals from the 19th century.

Earlier it was noted that the Camp will be setting up at the Coosa Valley Fair the first week of October, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. The Cherokee Artillery will be having an artillery encampment at the base of Myrtle Hill October 6th, 7th and 8th. They hope to have a four or six gun battery on the river.

One of the highlights of the month being planned will be The Grand Military Ball scheduled for Saturday evening October 21st at the Palladium. The Palladium is located on the eastern side of the Coosa Valley Fairgrounds.

General Joe Johnston and Nathan B Forrest will be our special guest and the music will be provided by the 8th Regiment Band. Please make plans to attend.
