NEXT MEETING

 

 The next meeting of the General Nathan B. Forrest SCV Camp 469 will be held on Thursday, July 2, 2009 beginning at 7:00 pm at the Sara Hightower Regional Library in Rome.

Our guest speaker will be Dr. Edward R. DeVries, author of the 4-volume book series, GLORY IN GREY. Dr. DeVries will give a presentation on the religious revival that swept through the Confederate Armies during the Civil War. Dr. Devries will have books available for signing and selling after the meeting. Dr DeVries will also be on Nelle Reagan’s WRGA radio program Talk of the Town at 9:30 am on July 2.

 

GENERAL FORREST BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

 

The Camp will celebrate the birthday of Gen. Forrest with a covered dish luncheon on Sunday, July 12th at the Silver Creek United Methodist Church beginning at 2 pm. This is a covered dish affair and the public is invited. 

 

CAMP CLEANUP ON CWPT WEBSITE

 

Photo’s of our cleanup at Myrtle Hill Cemetery are featured on the Civil War Preservation Trust’s website and on the photo sharing site “Flicker”.  Type in “Myrtle Hill” on the
Flicker site and our photos will appear. Look for the “Park Day” banner on the CWPT website to view.

 

ROADSIDE CLEANUP WELL ATTENDED

 

Nine members of the camp assisted with the latest roadside cleanup in Coosa on June 7th.  The highway is looking good and the DOT appreciates our efforts. Thanks to all who
assisted.

 

COMPANY A UNIFORMS

 

In an effort to make our appearance consistent, John Carruth and Hugh Durden have offered to purchase two uniform jackets and kepi’s for Company A with the understanding that the Camp do likewise.  There is also an offer to use a couple of jackets that belong to the 8th Regiment Band if the need arises.  This item of business is currently tabled and will be addressed at the July meeting.

 

STATE SCV REUNION

 

Ben Terry and Primm McConkey represented the camp at the annual State Reunion in Fayetteville. They will give their reports at the July meeting.

 

FINANCE COMMITTEE MEETING

 

There will be a camp finance and fundraising committee meeting prior to the August meeting beginning at 6 pm on August 6th. The following members are currently listed as
serving on the committee: Chairman: Stephen Carnes, Gary Roseman, Merroll Smith, John Harrison. If you would like to serve on this committee, the opportunity to volunteer will be made at the July meeting. Bring your ideas on income to the July meeting as our coffers are getting a bit thin.

 

POLITICAL REMINDER

 

Just a reminder to all camp members: The SCV is a non – political organization. Sometimes our speakers do not fully understand this concept, or ignore it, and feelings get hurt. We apologize. Please keep this in mind when requesting or suggesting speakers for the camp.
