Camp 469 Newsletter – July, 2006

NEXT MEETING

The next Camp meeting will be held Thursday, July 6, 2006 at the Sara Hightower Library beginning at 7 p.m.

Our guest speaker will be Dan Roper, publisher of Georgia Backroads Magazine. Dan has spoken to the camp on several occasions and the topic of the evening will be A Georgian at Gettysburg.

Please make plans to attend this informative lecture.

WEB SITE INFO NEEDED

Information is needed from Camp members for the Confederate Ancestor section of our website. Website visitors are looking for everything and anything. Names, dates, descriptions of battles fought, photos, letters, etc…

The ultimate goal of this section is to have at least a thumbnail sketch of everyone's ancestor in the website's Featured Ancestor section.

Please contact webmaster Stephen Carnes with your contribution at Dadcarnes@yahoo.com.

COOSA VALLEY FAIR

Camp 469 will once again be participating in the Coosa Valley Fair. Held annually in late September and early October, the fair attracts thousands to Rome.

Last year the fair served as a fund raiser and a recruitment tool for the Camp. Our success was limited by foul weather and location of our booth. This year we hope to improve upon both provided someone can pray up some decent weather.

The fair lasts from Tuesday until Saturday so a number of volunteers are needed to staff our booth. More details will be released as they become known.

CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL PLAQUE

There is still plenty of room on the Confederate Memorial Plaque at the library. Cost is only $10 and the only information requested is name, rank, company and state in which your ancestor served.

This an excellent way to recognize our Confederate ancestors.

CASH FOR TRASH

Camp Recycling Program

Camp 469 has recently opened an account with the Rome/ Floyd County Recycling Center to pay cash for trash. That’s right, cash for your recyclable materials such as aluminum cans, newspapers, magazines and such.

Camp members and their friends can now drop off their recyclable goods during normal business hours (8am – 3 pm) and the Camp will receive credit for their donation. Aluminum cans and newspapers / magazines bring the most money (25 cent lbs for cans and ½ cent per lbs for newspaper) so start collecting now.

Also, be sure to designate Camp 469 SCV as the non-profit group when you drop off your recyclable items.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION PICNIC!

All Camp members and their families are invited to the General Nathan B Forrest Birthday Celebration and Picnic on July 16th. The celebration will be held at the Silver Creek United Methodist Church beginning at 1 p.m.

This will be a covered dish affair with hot dogs, hamburgers, watermelon and home made ice cream. Everyone is encouraged to bring a covered dish to the picnic. If the weather cooperates we may even go wading in the creek.
