General Nathan Bedford Forrest Sons of Confederate Veterans, Rome, Ga. Camp 469 Newsletter – June, 2006 NEXT MEETING The next Camp meeting will be held Thursday June 1, 2006 at the Sara Hightower Regional Library beginning promptly at 7 p.m. Camp member Zack Waters will be speaking on The Battle of Dallas, Georgia. He will also give a profile of his new book. DEFENSE SERVICE MEDAL Any Camp member who has received the National Defense Service Medal is encouraged to please contact the Camp. Several members were recently recognized for their military service and we don’t want anyone to be overlooked for their service during times of conflict. CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL PLAQUE Just a reminder to all Camp members that we have an entire plaque to fill at the library recognizing our Confederate ancestors. The cost is only $10.00 per name. Please contact Stephen Carnes for additional details. MEMORIAL DAY FESTIVITIES Monday, May 29th, is Memorial Day and SCV Camp 469 will be participating in Rome’s Memorial Day ceremony and parade scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. The Camp will be responsible for firing the cannon during the festivities as well as having members in period dress accompany the cannon down Broad Street to Myrtle Hill Cemetery. The 8th Regiment Band is scheduled to provide the musical entertainment. Please contact Commander Hugh Durden for specific details. GEORGIA SCV REUNION Just a reminder that the Georgia SCV Reunion will be held in Gainesville June 16 –18th at the Gainesville Civic Center. A number of activities are scheduled including a battle on Lake Lanier between two ironclads from the National Civil War Museum. Forrest Monument Rededication The rededication of the General Nathan Bedford Forrest monument is scheduled for Saturday, June 3rd at 10 A.M. Central Daylight Time. It is imperative we show up in appreciation of the good work done by our Camp members in general and Ron Cescutti in particular. Directions: Travel west out of Rome on Hwy 20. Cross the Alabama line and continue another 8 miles. The monument will be on the right side of the road. Look for the flags. Camp 469 Recycling ProgramCamp 469 has recently joined forces with the Rome/Floyd County Recycling Center to help the local environment as well as raise a little cash for the Camp. Camp members and their friends and families can now drop off their recycled goods at the recycling center on Calhoun Avenue during normal business hours (8 am until 3 pm) and the money from the goods will be credited to the Camp's account. The recycling center accepts a variety of items including newspaper, aluminum cans and glass. Be sure to designate SCV Camp 469 when you drop off your items.
