Camp 469 Newsletter – June, 2003

The next Camp meeting will be THURSDAY, June 5, at 7:00.

NOTE: We are returning to our regular meeting day of Thursday and regular meeting place of the library.

Our main speaker, Mr William R Scaife, will give a talk on The Atlanta Campaign with an emphasis on the political implications of the campaign.

Mr Scaife is a graduate of Georgia Tech, Officer Candidate School, the owner of Civil War Publications and author of 6 books on Civil War subjects. His many laurels include Past President of Atlanta Civil War Round Table and Past Commander of the John B Gordon SCV Camp.

AUTO TAGS

As of May 25, Tom Brown, our State Adjutant, has received 647 applications for SCV tags for next year. Georgia has changed the rules on purchasing these tags: you will NOT be able to special-order them next year. The cut-off date is July 1 of THIS year, and we need 1000 applications. A blank application was included with most of the newsletters last month. All that is needed is your name, address, city, state, zip, date of birth, your signature,  and a check for $25 per tag made out to SCV Camp 469. Give the completed form(s) and check to any Camp Officer. The Camp will then mail the applications to Tom Brown.

Several Camp members are buying SCV tags for all their vehicles. Remember: you do NOT have to be a member of the SCV in order to purchase an SCV tag. make copies of the application, then ask your neighbors, co-workers and relatives if they'd be interested. Most will be.

PAST EVENTS

Our presence in the Memorial Day Parade in Rome on May 26 to honor all soldiers who died in our nation's service was very well received. Many thanks go out to the Confederate men who marched down Broad St representing our ancestors.

Commander Don Adams, Hugh Durden, John Carruth and Wayne Shelly presented a Living History at Cave Spring Elementary School on May 23. As always, these men represented our Heritage admirably, and in so doing educated many young minds in preparation for these children to further The Cause when they get of age.

If you have an e-mail address, but are not receiving any e-mails from the Camp, send a message to [romescv@comcast.net] with the subject Add Me. Most are on the list, but some addresses are wrong.

Don't forget that raffle tickets for the 3-gand Enfield Rifle are still on sale. If you wish to buy or sell tickets, they can be picked up at the next meeting.

Only 1 name has been added to the Confederate Memorial Plaque in the library in the past 4 months. All this is needed is your name, your ancestor's name, rank, etc., and $10.

The library currently has Confederate Pension Records for Floyd, Polk, Bartow and Chattooga Counties, and an order for 29 more counties was recently placed.
