Camp 469 Newsletter – May, 2007“A Historical Education & Preservation Organization” NEXT MEETING The next Camp 469 meeting will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2007 at the Sara Hightower Regional Library beginning at 7 p.m. Our guest speaker will be Mr. Willie Ray Johnson from Marietta. Mr. Johnson will speak on the subject of medicine during the Civil War. RELAY FOR LIFE Once again the American Cancer Society Relay for Life was a big success. Floyd County raised over $250,000 for the fight against cancer. Camp 469 and the Cherokee Artillery were well represented as we signaled the start of the relay with a controlled blast from a mortar. Special thanks to Merroll Smith for bringing the camp flags and to John Harrison for handling the artillery piece. The BLUE and GRAY TRAIL Check out this travel website with has brief histories and descriptions of towns in NW Georgia as well as points of interest such as Myrtle Hill, Chickamauga Battle Field, etc… Just type “The Blue and Gray Trail” in your Google search engine. 2nd Lt. COMMANDER NEEDED John Johnson, our former 2nd Lt. Commander has recently decided to take his reenacting skills to the next level and joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He is currently in boot camp at Parris Island. We wish Josh the best of luck in his new career of defending our country. CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL SERVICE Camp 469 will conduct our annual Confederate Memorial Service on Saturday, April 28th at 3 p.m. at Myrtle Hill Cemetery. Past SCV National Commander, Norman Dasinger will be our guest speaker. The public is encouraged to attend. MEMORIAL DAY PARADE All camp members are encouraged to participate in the Rome Memorial Day Parade scheduled for May 28th at 5 p.m. in downtown Rome. Details are still sketchy but the parade usually begins at the Citizen’s First Bank and ends at Myrtle Hill Cemetery. CONFEDERATE BALL AT THE PALADIUM All camp members and their families are invited to attend the Camp 469 Spring Confederate Ball. This spring’s ball is scheduled for April 28th, 2007 at the Palladium, which is located on the eastern edge of the Coosa Valley Fairgrounds on the Kingston Highway (Hwy 293 East). Once again Tim Key will be the dance master and a fun time is guaranteed to all who attend. Music will be provided by the 8th Regiment Band and conducted by John Carruth. The festivities will begin at 7:30 p.m. and tickets will be available at the door. Tickets will be $20.00 single or $30.00 per couple. A light meal / finger food will be provided by the Palladium. BATTLE OF RESACA The 143rd anniversary of the Battle of Resaca will be reenacted on May 18 – 20th at the battlefield just off Hwy 41 in Resaca. Reenactments will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The Cherokee Artillery will be participating in the event and camp members are encouraged to attend. If you haven’t had the opportunity to attend this annual event make plans to do so. It is a rare opportunity to witness a reenactment on the actual grounds in which the battle was fought.
