General Nathan Bedford Forrest Sons of Confederate Veterans, Rome, Ga. Camp 469 Newsletter – May, 2006 NEXT MEETING The next Camp meeting will be held Thursday, May 4, 2006 at the Sara Hightower Regional Library beginning at 7 p.m. All Camp members are encouraged to attend. Camp member Tony Warren will be our guest speaker. His topic will be Spy Stories and Munitions in the Civil War. Tony is a wealth of Civil War information and always an interesting speaker. CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE SCHEDULED Former National SCV Commander-in Chief, Dr. Norman Dasinger, will be our guest speaker at our annual Confederate Memorial Service scheduled for April 30th at 3 p.m. at Myrtle Hill Cemetery. Dr. Dasinger served as the National SCV Commander-in-Chief from 1992 – 1994 and was known for his moderate views regarding SCV matters. Please make him feel welcome in Rome. RELAY FOR LIFE Camp 469 and the Cherokee Artillery made a memorable impression on the Floyd County Relay for Life as they opened the festivities with a “Boom!” that was heard clean all the way to Coosa. Ten members of the Camp and their families participated in the rain shortened event which to date has raised over $240,000.00. In addition to powder and ambiance to the occasion, the Camp and artillery chipped in an additional $466.80 to the pot. Thanks to everyone who participated in and contributed to the Relay for Life. FUTURE CAMP 469 EVENTS May 7th - Van Wert, Georgia Confederate Memorial service will be held at the Van Wert Baptist Church in conjunction with Cedartown SCV Camp #77. The event will begin at 3 p.m. Also note that several Camp 469 members have Confederate ancestors buried in the Van Wert Baptist Church Cemetery. The public is invited and Camp 469 members are encouraged to attend and support our fellow SCV Camps as they honor their ancestors in Van Wert. May 20 – 21 - Resaca, Georgia Battle of Resaca Reenactment The 142nd Anniversary Battle of Resaca Reenactment will be held May 20 – 21, 2006 in Resaca, GA. Hosted by the Georgia Division Re-enactors Association, the event will be held on the historic Chitwood Farm, site of the actual Battle of Resaca. Follow signs one mile north of Resaca on Hwy 41 to the battlefield. Activities are scheduled throughout both days with the battle starting around 2 p.m. (depending on the punctuality of the Yankees)
