Camp 469 Newsletter – April, 2008“A Historical Education & Preservation Organization” NEXT MEETING The next SCV Camp 469 meeting will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2008 at the Sara Hightower Regional Library. Our guest speaker will be Past National SCV Chaplain John Weaver. He will give a presentation on The Religious Revival that swept through the Army of Northern Virginia during the War of Northern Aggression. Pass the word and make plans to attend. BLUE POND MEMORIAL SERVICE The Camp was well represented at the Confederate Memorial Service held at Blue Pond Church on March 8th. Thanks to all who participated in this event. ADOPT A ROAD CLEANUP Ten members of SCV Camp 469 met at Rice Springs on March 16th to clean our one mile section of Highway 20. A total of 44 bags of trash were collected and numerous hazardous items were marked during the three hour session. During the course of the afternoon Stan Landers gave a brief, yet interesting, economic lecture on personal protection devices and we were entertained by Cherry Rose. Thanks to the following camp members for helping with the roadside cleanup: Ben Terry, Jim Dugger, John Harrison, Stephen Carnes, Brian Byrd, Daniel Fisher, Scott Brock, Stan Landers, Merroll Smith and Joe Taormina. RESACA MEMORIAL SERICE Former SCV Camp 469 Commander, Mike Ragland will be the guest speaker at the Resaca Cemetery Confederate Memorial Service to be held on Saturday, April 19th. The time of the service has not been released. Check with Mike Ragland for details. CEDARTOWN SCV CAMP 1st Lt. Commander, Jim Dugger was the guest speaker at the Cedartown SCV Camp on March 13th. The topic of the evening was CWPT “Park Day” Cleanup and the Adopt –A-Road Program our camp is participating in. Many ideas of ways to increase a camps visibility were discussed. ROME MEMORIAL SERVICE Camp 469 will conduct its Confederate Memorial Service on Sunday, April 20 beginning at 3 pm at the Myrtle Hill Cemetery . Mr. Tracy Wright will be our guest speaker for the service. UDC MEMORIAL SERVICE The Rome UDC will hold their Confederate Memorial Service on Sunday April 27 at Bush Arbor Church . Check with Daryl Jean Gould for details. MAY MEETING SPEAKERS The May meting of Camp 469 will be special as members of the camp are being asked to prepare a brief (2 – 5 minutes) presentation on our respective Confederate ancestors. Information such as ancestors name, state, regiment and engagements they were involved in will be given. This will be a great reminder of why we gather each month. CIVIL WAR PRESERVATION TRUST “PARK DAY 2008” April 5, 2008 Myrtle Hill Cemetery 8:30 - 12 Noon On Saturday April 5th, Camp 469 will participate in “Park Day 2008” which is a nationwide event sponsored by the Civil War Preservation Trust and The History Channel. Our camp has been given permission by the City of Rome to clean the headstones in the Confederate section of Myrtle Hill Cemetery . Response for volunteers has been outstanding as over 17 camp members have signed on to assist as well as several members from the Cedartown camp. We will also be joined by the National Honor Society from Rome High School for the event. Local Civil War Historian Phil Wood will join us mid-morning for a brief presentation regarding the importance of preserving our battlefields and parks. Parking is limited so arrive early. There is a small lot across from the cemetery at the former site of Poor man’s pawn as well as a small lot at the end of the Broad Street Bridge . Carpool if you can. All volunteers are asked to be checked in by 8:30 am for instructions. For additional information please contact 1st Lt. Commander Jim Dugger at (706) 266 – 9445. Camp members are asked to bring the following supplies with them to “Park Day” if they can. Bucket or pail Clean, 1 or 3 gallon sprayer. Can never have had chemicals in it. Soft bristle brush (you can pick one up at the Dollar Store) Dish washing soap (Dollar store) Plastic garbage bags
