Camp 469 Newsletter – April, 2004

NEXT MEETING

    Due to the book fair taking place at the library, the next Camp meeting will be Thursday, April 1, at 7:00 at Adams Furniture on Broad St. The speaker will be Dr Thomas Scott, professor of History at Kennesaw State. Dr Scott will speak on "Why Georgia Seceded from the Union".

Among the things to be discussed will be:

  • Camp photograph

  • Confederate Ball

  • Confederate Memorial Service

  • Memorial Monument

  • National SCV Convention in Dalton

CAMP PHOTOGRAPH

April 4, 3:00 PM at the foot of Myrtle Hill Cemetery. All Camp members are requested to attend for the first-ever photograph to be taken of the entire Camp. Everyone will be contacted by phone. At that time, if you anticipate a transportation problem, let us know. We WILL get you to and from the event.

Proper attire will be Sunday best or period dress. Wear your SCV pin, tie, and all SCV medals you have acquired. Clyde Collier will be taking the photograph which will be an 8X10. An outline of all the participants will be placed on the back of the photo with names of the members in the outline. The photographs will be available to members for $10 each.

The photograph will then be submitted to the Confederate Veteran magazine and The Georgia Confederate newspaper.

BURIAL OF THE CREW OF THE HUNLEY

The burial of the crew of the Confederate submarine H L Hunley will take place on April 16 & 17 in Charleston, SC.

CONFEDERATE BALL

The Confederate Ball will be held April 24, 2004 at 7:00 at Heritage Hall which is located at the corner of Glen Milner and E 3rd Ave. The 8th Regiment Band, led by John Carruth, will present the music. Atlanta's Tim Key will be dance master. Tickets are available every day at Adam's Furniture.

CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL SERVICE

The Confederate Memorial Service will be held on April 25 at 3:00 at Myrtle Hill Cemetery.

MEMORIAL MONUMENT

The design has been formulated and approved for the Confederate Memorial Monument. While funding is being studied, volunteers are now needed to help develop a list of the names and units of the soldiers who fought in the War of Northern Aggression. Please contact compatriot Gary Worthan if you can help.

NATIONAL SCV CONVENTION

The 2004 SCV National Convention will be held July 28 through July 31 at Dalton's Northwest Georgia Convention and Trade Center. Ben Terry, Gary Worthan, Commander Adams and Lt Commanders Hamby and Durden will represent our Camp and our 9 votes. Information on items to be voted on will be forthcoming by the may Camp meeting.

MEMORIAL PLAQUE

Two more names have been added to the Confederate Memorial Plaque in the library. There are now 9 spots left before this plaque is filled. $10 will display the name, rank, company, regiment and state of your ancestor as well as your name.
