Camp 469 Newsletter – March, 2008“A Historical Education & Preservation Organization” NEXT MEETINGThe next SCV Camp 469 meeting will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2008 at the Sara Hightower Regional Library beginning at 7 p.m. Our guest speaker will be Ms. Nell Regan from WRGA. Nell has been a supporter of the Camp for many years and it will be a pleasure to have her as our guest. BLUE POND CHURCH Rev. John Weaver, from central Georgia, will be a guest speaker at Blue Pond Baptist Church on Saturday, March 8th at 2 p.m. The Reverend Weaver’s topic will be The Revival that swept the camp of the Army of Northern Virginia . Rev. Weaver is a friend of Camp member Austin Goggans who serves as the pastor of Blue Pond Church . Blue Pond Church is located on Morrison Campground Rd. just off the Kingston Highway . The January edition has a reprint of an article that appeared in the Asheville Tribune entitled, “Understanding the Causes of the Civil War. Impact of the Morrill Tariff”, by Mike Scruggs. The link to this website is through the 1st Brigade Georgia Division SCV site, http://gascv1.org CAMP ADOPTS HIGHWAY Thanks to the efforts of 2nd Lt Commander John Harrison, Camp 469 has adopted a stretch of Hwy 20 west of Rome near Rice Creek. The State of Georgia DOT has already placed markers indicating that SCV Camp 469 is responsible for keeping that section of highway litter free. The first organized clean up is scheduled for Sunday, March 16th at 2 p.m. We will meet near the intersection of Barker Rd and Hwy 20. Your participation will insure the success of this event. Contact 2nd Lt Commander John Harrison at (706) 802–0719 for additional information or a ride to the clean up. NATIONAL PARK DAY On April 5th, Camp 469 will participate in the Civil War Preservation Trusts “Park Day 2008”, a nationwide event co-sponsored by The History Channel. Our camp has been given permission by the City of Rome to clean the headstones in the Confederate Section of Myrtle Hill Cemetery . Response for volunteers has been outstanding as over 17 camp members have signed on to assist with this project. Also, the National Honor Society at Rome High School has enlisted over 50 of their members to help that morning. All volunteers will receive a T-shirt for their efforts as well as the opportunity to listen to a brief presentation mid-morning from Civil War historian Phil Wood. All volunteers will be asked to check in by 8:30 a.m. for instructions. For additional information contact 1st Lt Commander Jim Dugger at 706-266-9445. We will also need camp members to bring the following items with them to “Park Day”: Bucket or pail Clean 1 to 3 gallon sprayer (to rinse the tombstone once cleaned) Soft bristle brush.
