ED BEARSS & HISTORY GROUP TO VISIT ROME Ed Bearss, the former Chief Historian for the National Park Service and featured speaker on The History Channel will, on March 11, lead a group of approximately 60 history 'buffs' around the various War Between the States Western Theater sites located in the area. Although an itinerary has not been set, the group is expected to be here from 9 AM to 1 PM. The trip to Rome is part of the tour of North Georgia battlefields sponsored by the Georgia Battlefields Association group of Atlanta. Rome is of particular interest to Bearss and the preservation group because it is one of the few cities during the war that experienced some sort of activity in all of the war years from 1861 to 1865. The city and county were specifically selected because of the area's unique location in the Western Theater. Among the sites to be visited by Bearss will be the site of the Noble Brothers Foundry in downtown Rome. This foundry was instrumental in supplying the Confederacy with cannon tubes and other cast metal items such as belt plates and buckles. Other sites include: Ft Stovall (Myrtle Hill), Ft Attaway, Shorter Hill, 5th Avenue Baptist Church and Ft Norton. Fort Norton, however, will be a major stop for the group. Visitors will be treated to light artillery demonstrations by the Cherokee Artillery/Lilly's Battery living history/re-enacting group, as well as infantry demonstrations by Co A of the Floyd Legion Living History regiment. Original rifle trenches and artillery emplacements at the fort will also be open for inspection and interpretation. [Home] |
