Camp 469 Newsletter – February, 2008“A Historical Education & Preservation Organization” NEXT MEETING The next SCV Camp 469 meeting will be held on Thursday, February 7, 2008 at the Sara Hightower Regional Library beginning at 7 pm. Our guest speaker will be camp member Stan Landers who will give a presentation on his Confederate ancestor Eli Landers of the 16th Georgia, Flint Hill Grays. You don’t want to miss it. CIVIL WAR SHOW Camp 469 will participate in the Chickamauga Civil War Show scheduled for February 2nd and 3rd in Dalton at the NW Georgia Trade Center located at Exit 333 on I-75. This is one of the biggest shows in the south and admission is only $7.00. Even if you are not a collector there are a lot of interesting artifacts to check out. If you would like to assist Merroll Smith with our booth please give him a call at (706) 234-0093 or just show up and volunteer. LEE- JACKSON DINNER A special thanks goes to all of those who contributed to the success of the Lee- Jackson Dinner on January 19th. The evening was a big success and no one went home hungry or unenlightened on the subject of the economic impact of Civil War tourism. CAMP DVD’s AVAILABLE Thanks to the efforts of Bob Perry , speakers at our camp meeting are now available to other SCV camps on DVD. Bob has been diligently recording our speakers over the past year and archiving them for future viewing. Several camps have already utilized our DVD’s for their own camp meetings in-lieu of a live speaker. Great job Bob! CONFEDERATE ANCESTOR SITE Just a reminder: If you have information that you would like to have shared on the camp website regarding your Confederate ancestor, please contact Stephen Carnes. TWO CAMP PROJECTS PLANNED FOR SPRING Two major projects are being planned for the spring that will enable all members to become involved without putting on a wool uniform. Camp officers John Harrison and Jim Dugger are spearheading these projects and everyone is encouraged to participate. Information about the projects will be updated at the monthly meetings and via the camp newsletter and website. ADOPT A ROAD PROGRAM CLEANUP PLANNED Camp 469 is becoming involved in the Georgia Adopt-a-Road Program and the camp has been assigned a section of Hwy 20 in Coosa near Rice Spring Creek. A cleanup is tentatively scheduled for March 15th. 2nd Lt Commander John Harrison will have additional information at the Camp meeting as well as details concerning the placement of a marker designating that stretch of highway being maintained by the General Nathan B Forrest SCV Camp 469 in Rome , Georgia. CAMP TO PARTICIPATE IN CWPT’S “PARK DAY” On April 5th, Camp 469 will participate in “Park Day 2008” which is sponsored by the Civil War Preservation Trust and The History Channel. Our camp has been given permission by the City of Rome to clean the headstones in the Confederate section of Myrtle Hill Cemetery . All participants will be given a T-shirt for their contribution and Mr. Phil Wood, Assistant Principle at West Central Elementary in Rome , will give a presentation on the need to preserve and protect our historical areas. 1st Lt Commander Jim Dugger will have additional details and updated information at the next meeting as well as signing up volunteers and getting T-shirt sizes.
