Camp 469 Newsletter – November, 2002

The next Camp meeting will be on November 7 at 7:00 at the library. Our featured speaker will be our own Tommy Smith. Tommy, a Civil War re-enactor, associate professor at Shorter College, and Chickamauga Battlefield guide, will be talking about the 3rd SC Infantry (Kershaw's Brigade, Hood's Division, Army of Northern VA) and their role at Chickamauga. In particular, he will focus on one soldier in the regiment, Pvt Benjamin Shumpert, and his unique uniform and equipment.

Among the things to be discussed during the meeting will be:

  • The choice of officers nominated for the coming year
  • The Living History at Model Elementary School in November
  • The Living History at Ft Norton during Heritage Holidays
  • The 2 Confederate Memorials we had in October
  • The progress made on the Confederate Memorial Service for either Augustus Wright or Robert Battey
  • The design of our float in the Rome Christmas Parade, who will help, and when and where the work will be done
  • The progress made on what to do with the books we have acquired
  • The date and place for the Lee-Jackson Dinner in January

We added 6 names to the Confederate Memorial Plaque at the last meeting. We need your Confederate Ancestor's name, rank, regiment, company, state and how you wish your name to appear on the plaque. Each one is $10.

Remember: You can purchase a Sons of Confederate Veterans license plate. They are only $25 extra, but it must be ordered several months ahead of time
