Camp 469 Newsletter – January, 2007“A Historical Education & Preservation Organization” NEXT MEETING The next Camp 469 meeting will be held on Thursday, January 4, at the Sara-Hightower Regional Library beginning at 7 pm. Our guest speaker will be Camp member Josh Johnson. Josh will give a power point presentation on uniforms of the Civil War. Please make plans to attend. ELECTION RESULTS Election of Camp officers for 2007 was held at the December Meeting. Commander: Ben Terry 1st Lt Commander: Jim Dugger 2nd Lt Commander: Josh Johnson Adjutant: Stephen Carnes CAMP RECYCLING PROGRAM Camp members are encouraged to drop off their aluminum cans and newspapers at the Rome/Floyd County Recycling Center on Calhoun Avenue. Several members have been very active in this project and all are encouraged to participate. The account is listed under Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 469. It's a simple way of fund raising for the Camp and great for the community. ROBERT E LEE MARCH Governor Purdue has signed a proclamation designating Jan. 19th as the Bicentennial Birthday of General Robert E Lee. A parade has been scheduled in his honor in Atlanta on that day beginning at 3 p.m. The march will end at the state capital. All Camp members are encouraged to attend. CIVIL WAR RELIC SHOW Camp 469 will be setting up a booth at the Chickamauga Southern National Civil War Show and Sale in Dalton, GA. on February 3rd and 4th. This is one of the largest shows in the Southeast with a huge selection of antiques and artifacts from the Civil War period. Follow the signs from I-75 Exit 333 (Walnut Avenue) to the NW Georgia Trade Center. MEMORIAL PLAQUE Just a reminder that there is still room on the Confederate Memorial Plaque at the Sara-Hightower Regional Library. The cost is only $10 per name and is an excellent way to honor your ancestor who fought for the Southern cause. Contact Stephen Carnes for additional information. LEE-JACKSON DINNER SCHEDULED GEORGIA COMMANDER CHARLIE LOTT GUEST SPEAKER Georgia Division Commander Charlie Lott will be our guest speaker at our annual Lee-Jackson Dinner. This years event will be held Saturday, January 20th at the Senior Center on Riverside Parkway beginning at 7 p.m. Commander Lott will speak and will also swear in our new officers for the coming year. The dinner will be a covered dish affair and family and friends are encouraged to attend and help the Camp kick off the "Year of Lee". LEE'S CADETS Camp 469 is in the formative stages of starting a Lee's Cadets Camp for those with or without Confederate lineage. The Camp is for ages 5 - 16 years, male or female. Additional information will be given at the January Camp meeting and all sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters are encouraged to attend this informative meeting. PEPPERELL CIVIL WAR CLUB Pepperell Middle School teacher and Camp member Austin Goggans has started a Civil War Club at Pepperell Middle School. The Camp has been asked to provide speakers for a wide range of topics and Josh Johnson was the first speaker. His topic was the day-to-day life of the Confederate soldier. This is an excellent way for the Camp to reach out to the community and teach the next generation of our Southern and Civil War heritage.
