2nd  BATTLE OF RESACA WON

Preservationists working to save portions of the Resaca Battlefield won a victory in late December when the Tennessee Valley Authority agreed to build their new power lines alongside the historic battlefield instead of through it.

The original proposal had 80-foot tall power lines and 150-foot swath running directly through land where the Confederate and Union forces clashed 140 years ago.

Public response, led by the Friends of Resaca Battlefield Inc., swayed the TVA to move the line away from the site. 1st Lt Commander-elect Tommy Smith brought this situation to the Camp's attention in a call to action on the Camp's website in which numerous members responded with e-mails to 11th District Congressman Phil Gingrey.

Steve Pitt, a consultant and TVA's lead engineer on the project said he received e-mails from across the country urging the TVA to avoid the battle area. Pitt said the the TVA staff listened and sent in historical consultants to check the area. It gave "validation of the historical integrity that is, in fact, here".

The Battle of Resaca was fought May 13 - 15, 1864, as part of Gen William T Sherman's campaign through Georgia. Union forces totaled more than 100,000. Confederate troops, Commanded by Gen Joseph E Johnston, numbered 55 to 60,000. The battle was inconclusive, though thousands were killed or wounded.
